(Text by Reporter Xing Beilin/Photograph by Reporter Yu Ruwen) On October 25, the 2017 ICF Canoe Marathon World Cup, Jing’an, Shanghai·Shaoxing·China, kicked off in Suhe Creek in Jing’an District. Over 200 athletes from more than 10 countries and regions, such as China, Germany, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands and so on, brought forth together the brilliant moments of fighting and competing with their vigor and passion.
Jon Kronberg, Chairman of Canoe Marathon Committee of International Canoe Federation, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Xu Bin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau, Director of Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and Director of the Organizing Committee, announced the opening of the competition. Lu Xiaodong, Deputy Secretary of CPC Jing’an District Committee, Chief Executive of Jing’an District Government and Director of the Organizing Committee, Li Weiping, Chairman of Standing Committee of Jing’an District People’s Congress, and Chen Yongdi, Chairman of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee, blew the starting whistles. Sun Weimin, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and Executive Director of the Organizing Committee, Shen Daming, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jing’an District Committee and Director of Publicity Department of CPC Jing’an District Committee, and Wu Liping, Vice-chairman of Standing Committee of Jing’an District People’s Congress, attended the opening ceremony. Bao Yingjing, Deputy Executive of Jing’an District Government and Executive Director of the Organizing Committee, presided over the opening ceremony.
In his speech, Lu Xiaodong, on behalf of the Organizing Committee and Jing’an District Government, welcomed warmly guests attending the event and athletes participating in the competition, expressed heartfelt thanks to people of all sectors having long been caring and supporting economic and social development of Jing’an District and staff and volunteers working hard for the competition, and wished that all athletes would carry forward the spirit of sports, enjoy the fun of the game and achieve remarkable results.
As a Class A international event classified by the General Administration of Sport of China, this Canoeing Marathon World Cup was organized based on the standards of International Canoe Federation and the track was designated as the riverway from Garden Bridge of Shanghai to Tibet Road Bridge. Men’s canoeing, women’s canoeing and 3.6km canoeing were competed in two groups, namely Youth Group and the Adult Group. In addition to short-distance events, classic events series and leisure group competitions were also held. According to rules, a 100-meter race track on the land was set up, athletes need to finish the land run while holding canoes in the competition process, which created the unique scene of the alternating Canoeing Marathon on land and in water.
According to the Organizing Committee, this Canoe Marathon World Cup was the canoe event held in the third successive year along Suzhou Creek, which was also the first canoe marathon of ICF held in China, marking a great step of the development of China’s canoe marathon. The organization of this event instilled new energy to city eco-space, enabled citizens to closely experience the charm of high-level sports event and further promoted the popularization and development of canoe. Through development with efforts in recent years, Suzhou Creek canoeing has become a unique landscape sports brand event of Jing’an District and an important platform of demonstrating the “water heritage, cultural heritage, eco-heritage and human-heritage” with Shanghai characteristics on banks of Suzhou Creek, playing a positive role in promoting coordinated and integrated development on banks of Suzhou Creek and building Shanghai into a world-famous sports city.
