(Text by Reporter Huang Jingjing / Photo by Reporter Yu Ruwen) With green trees and still water, now the residents in Jing’an District have one more excellent place for having a rest and sightseeing. The reporter learned from Jing’an District Afforestation Authority that after the construction of almost half a year, the model riverside landscape segment along both sides of Pengyuepu (from Lingshi Road to Wenshui Road) has been open to the public recently. Meanwhile, as the only city-level green path in Jing’an, the green path along both sides of the Suzhou River is also under busy construction.
Build a “New Line with Pleasant Living Environment”
Starting from Lingshi Road on the south bank and ending at Wenshui Road on the north bank, the model greening segment program along the riverside of Pengyuepu (from Lingshi Road to Wenshui Road) is about 960 meters long and 60-70 meters wide, occupying an area of over 30 thousand square meters. The program mainly includes the construction of the riverbank landscaping and the greening along both sides of the river, the construction of the riverside promenade, the construction of the supplementary service facilities including the Jincheng Road Pedestrian Bridge, public toilets and leisure pavilions and corridors, as well as the construction of the lighting on both sides of the river.
Jing’an District Afforestation Authority introduced that the landscape design of the Pengyuepu model riverside green belt segment keeps to the concept of four-dimensional landscaping system, namely integrating the four elements including landscaping, eco-regulation, culture and behavior. In the future, Pengyuepu riverside green belt will be constructed into a model riverside segment known as a “new line with pleasant living environment, a new major venue for civic events and a new experience with international quality”, as well as an ecological, landscaping and life-oriented model riverside landscape space with small and medium-sized watercourses in central urban area featuring a demonstration effect on pleasant living environment, civic events and international quality.
It is learned that through the construction of the green path and recreation trail system, the project will construct an unimpeded walking space along both sides of Pengyuepu in the central area of the municipality, forming a north-south waterfront walking system in the central urban area of northern Shanghai. The promenade will get through both sides of the river and meet the demands of citizens for fitness activities. A ribbon-like natural and ecological riverside park will be built, and the limited hinterland space of the waterfront green belt will be leveraged. The small and medium-sized watercourses in the municipality will be changed from the “back court” to the “front court” through organized combination of the recreation trail, greening, facilities and lighting, building a natural ribbon-like waterfront park in the central urban area. Meanwhile, the promenade will adopt colorful permeable concrete, and some of the activity sites will adopt ecological ceramic permeable bricks to respond to the ecological permeating concept of a “Sponge City”.
Accelerate the Connection of the South and North Bank of the Suzhou River
The total length of the waterfront line of the Suzhou River is about 5.6 kilometers, among which the north bank approximately accounts for 3.9 kilometers and the south bank for 1.7 kilometers. There are many preserved historical and cultural buildings on both sides of the Suzhou River. At present, there are 11 bridges crossing the Suzhou River.
According to Jing’an District’s plan for the green path, the Suzhou River green path will form a “One Ring and One Belt” space layout. “One Ring” refers to the annular green waterfront space locating at the south and north bank of the Suzhou River connecting the Puji Road Bridge and the North Hengfeng Road Bridge, and “One Belt” refers to the ribbon-like green waterfront line on the north bank of the Suzhou River connecting the North Hengfeng Road Bridge and the Henan Road Bridge.
It is introduced that in 2016, Jing’an started the plan design and implementation work for the construction of the green path along both sides of the Suzhou River, and in 2017, it completed the construction of the green path along the Jing’an channel segment of Suzhou River (the section from the North Hengfeng Road Bridge to the Puji Road Bridge) of about 1.4 kilometers long first. The reconstruction mainly focused on the north (the section from the North Hengfeng Road Bridge to the Puji Road Bridge) and the south bank (the section from Anyuan Road to the Puji Road Bridge) of the Suzhou River. In combination with green path setting, the upgrading of the space layout, plant setting of the green space and the inner resting and lighting facilities, the green path identification system was unified, opening the annular green waterfront space connecting the Puji Road Bridge and the North Hengfeng Road Bridge in an all-around way, and forming a greenery landscape corridor meeting the demands of the citizens for fitness, rest and sightseeing.
At present, Jing’an District Afforestation Authority is actively promoting the construction work of the waterfront green path along the north bank of the Suzhou River (that is the “One Belt”), optimizing the plan for the construction of the new green space and the plan for the construction of the new waterfront landscape along the north bank of the Suzhou River, and implementing the construction of the green waterfront belt along the north bank. Specific projects include the construction of the public green space on land block Baokuang 119 and 120, the construction of public green space at Datong Base at the eastern node of the North-South Elevated Road, and the construction of the central green space in the Suzhou River area. With the progress and implementation of the project series including developing the land blocks along the Suzhou River Changping Road Bridge and the land blocks along the Suzhou River, the connection of and interaction between the north and south bank of the Suzhou River will be accelerated, stimulating the vitality of the public space along the Jing’an channel segment of the Suzhou River in an all-around way, and making the landscaping environment of the urban area of Jing'an more appealing.
