Recently, under the guidance of the Publicity Department of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Municipal Office for Spiritual Civilization Construction, the results of the 2024 "Shanghai Good Doctor" selection were officially unveiled. This selection was sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Health Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Health System Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee. Shen Yundong, Executive Vice President of Jing'an District Central Hospital (Jing'an Branch of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University) and Deputy Director of Limb Function Rehabilitation Center, was awarded the title of "Shanghai Good Doctor" in 2024.
Shen Yundong, male, 46 years old, a member of the Communist Party of China, holds the position of Executive Vice President of Jing'an District Central Hospital (Jing'an Branch of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University), Deputy Director of Limb Function Rehabilitation Center, and Deputy Director and Senior Physician of Hand Surgery Department of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University.
He is currently the Chairman-designate of the Hand Surgery Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, Member and Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Surgery of the Hand, CMA, and PI of the National Clinical Research Center on Geriatric Disorder (Huashan). He was selected as an Excellent Academic Leader in Shanghai and won several awards such as the "National Famous Doctor and Emerging Youth" and the "Silver Snake Award" of Shanghai Health System.
Data show that over 23 million patients in China suffer from central nervous system injuries such as stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral palsy. Treating hemiplegia remains a challenging medical issue worldwide. Professor Xu Wendong from the Hand Surgery Department of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University pioneered the C7 Nerve Cross Transposition for Treating Central Hemiplegia. This technique has significantly improved the function of hemiplegic limbs, hailed by international peers as "the beginning of a new treatment field".
Shen Yundong has performed over 800 surgeries every year over the past five years. As a core member of the Hand Surgery Innovation Team, he has participated in the R&D and promotion of the international innovative surgery "C7 Nerve Cross Transposition for Treating Central Hemiplegia". He has also spearheaded efforts to refine the surgical technique.
Under the leadership of Professor Xu Wendong, Shen Yundong developed the anterior vertebral displacement method for C7 Nerve Cross Transposition. This innovation significantly shortens the nerve regeneration distance, eliminates the need for nerve transplantation, improves the surgical effect, and contributes substantially to maintaining an international leading position in this field. The relevant work has contributed significantly to the team's publication in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in 2018.
While engaging in clinical work, Shen Yundong focuses on the research of brain plasticity after peripheral nerve transfer.
Under the leadership of Professor Xu Wendong, Shen Yundong led a scientific research team in completing the highly complex C7 nerve vertebra anterior cross transposition surgical modeling on mice and macaques (first reported in the world). This study revealed that the key mechanism for the effective treatment of central hemiplegia involves using the neural channel constructed by bilateral C7 nerve cross transposition to redirect the sensory feedback from the affected limb to the healthy cerebral hemisphere. This process induces significant remodeling of the healthy corticospinal tract and reactivates a neural pathway that was present in infancy but became dormant in adulthood. This finding marks a significant advancement in the exploration of brain plasticity mechanisms involved in C7 Nerve Cross Transposition for Treating Central Hemiplegia. The finding was published in Science Advances, a sub-journal of Science, in 2022. This study is of great significance for understanding the efficacy mechanism of C7 Nerve Cross Transposition for Treating Central Hemiplegia in clinical practice and the brain function remodeling patterns.
The relevant research results have successively earned the Special Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2020) and the First Prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award (2023). Shen Yundong attended the State Science and Technology Awarding Meeting as a representative of the winners on June 24, 2024.
