One hundred years ago, the Second National Congress of the CPC was held in Shanghai, at which the Resolution on the United Front for Democracy was adopted. This is the first document the CPC specially issued for the united front policy. It unified the strategic thinking of the whole CPC on the issue of the united front and had a groundbreaking position and significance in the history of the development of the CPC’s united front.

This year marks the centenary of the CPC’s clear identification of its united front policy. Recently, the Shanghai Jing’an District Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held this year’s first Reading Party of Jing’an District in the Memorial Site of the Second National Congress of the CPC, for the purpose of making the CPPCC’s original aspirations and missions better understood by reviewing the 100-year history of the CPC’s united front work since the second CPC National Congress, sharing the CPC’s glory and development.

Themed by the “Second CPC National Congress and CPC’s United Front”, the Reading Party was attended by Yu Lijuan, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Yu Xiufen, Director of the Sector and District Working Committee of the CPPCC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Yu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Jing’an District Committee, Ding Baoding, Secretary of the Leading Party Members Group of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee, Gu Dingyun, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Jing’an District Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Leading Party Members Group of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee, and Director of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Jing’an District Committee, Chen Qihua, Member of the Leading Party Members Group of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee and Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee, and other leaders.

During the event, the Memorial Site of the Second National Congress of the CPC introduced the background and main historical achievements of the Second CPC National Congress. Professor Yao Jianjian from the Shanghai Institute of Socialism told the historical background before and after the Second National Congress of the CPC, and shared the stories that happened after the Second National Congress of the CPC and went down in the history of the united front work. Luo Xixian, a famous folk painting and comic strip painter in Shanghai, shared the story of the united front through his works. Deng Weizhi, a tenured professor at Shanghai University and an adviser to the Chinese Sociological Association, expressed his perceptions and expectations for the centenary of the united front policy.

The event also invited Yao Jianjian to interpret in detail the new revelations in the Regulations on Political Consultation work of the Communist Party of China recently issued by the CPC Central Committee. Democratic parties, Shanghai Jing’an District General Chamber of Commerce and people without party affiliation in Jing’an District shared their perceptions and expectations for the united front over the past century through videos.

According to sources, the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee will work with parties, special committees, and sectors to launch a series of distinctive reading events that focus on the theme of studying, understanding, and practicing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in different sub-districts and towns.

The event was hosted by the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee and the United Front Work Department of the CPC Jing’an District Committee, co-organized by the Committee on Culture, History, and Studies of the CPPCC Jing’an District Committee, the Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese, the CPPCC Member Liaison Group of Jiangning Road Sub-district, Memorial Site of the Second National Congress of the CPC, and the Jing’an District Institute of Socialism. Democratic parties in Jing’an District were present by invitation.
