On July 23, 1922, the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China adopted the first Party Constitution.
On July 23, 2022, China Post Group Corporation issued a commemorative stamp for the Centenary of the Adoption of the First Party Constitution.
A small stamp brings us back to one hundred years ago to witness the birth of the first Party Constitution, the historical moment that breaks new ground for the CPC’s great cause. Speaking of this extraordinarily meaningful commemorative stamp, Zhang Fan, the designer of the stamp, said that with deep reverence, he integrated his own comprehension of the Party Constitution and the Party history into the design, hoping that more people could learn about the history of the Party Constitution and the development of the Party from the stamp.
The commemorative stamp, with the size of 50 X 30 mm, features the Party emblem, selected chapters of the first Party Constitution, and the Memorial Site of the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the background depicts a Party flag, in the gradient color of sunrise, symbolizing that the revolution will illuminate China and its future path, vividly demonstrating the unremitting glorious course and great achievements of the Chinese people under the leadership of the CPC.
Zhang Fan said, “The greatest difficulty in designing this commemorative stamp is to highlight the solemnity without rigidity.” Designing the commemorative stamp is like a particularly rigorous thesis writing, which needs to objectively restore the three design elements of the Party Constitution, Party emblem, and the Second National Congress of the CPC and present the aesthetic perception with the combination of elements and the manifestation of design language, and at the same time attract people to understand the story behind the stamp.
To better complete the task of designing the commemorative stamp, Zhang Fan reviewed the history of the Party and enhanced the appeal of this commemorative stamp through fine processing of many details. For example, when dealing with the close-up view of the Party Constitution that is arranged in a fan shape, the texture and damage of the paper are shown without omission, and the golden light radiating from the back of the Party Constitution symbolizes that the first Party Constitution is “the light of hope”. In its distant shot, although the Memorial Site of the Second National Congress of the CPC is sketched, every window and every tile in the building has been restored as much as possible.
The composition of the stamp also reflects Zhang Fan’s ingenious design. Considering the correlation of the three design elements, he determined the design idea of horizontal composition at the beginning. Zhang said, “I made the outer contour of the stamp into a well-designed flying red flag, which breaks free from the mediocre structure of the stamp, stimulates the imagination of being cohesive and positive, and echoes with the Party emblem on the stamp, reminiscent of the Party flag fluttering in the wind.” Zhang Fan also mentioned that the dynamic curve is not only reflected in one stamp, but also in the overall composition. The curves of each stamp can be connected so that the entire sheet of stamps presents rows of wave patterns, symbolizing the magnificent journey of the CPC leading the Chinese people to victory.
