The 17th Shanghai Games held from November 2022 to January 2023 saw great success. The delegation of Jing’an District ranked fifth in the city in terms of the total score of the group and the ranking of the group medals, setting the best record in all previous sessions. Besides, it also won the “Sportsmanship Award” of the Games. With such good results, the delegation fulfilled the goals and made new breakthroughs in youth sports training results.
On February 24, the Summary and Commendation Meeting for Jing’an District Delegation of the 17th Shanghai Games (hereinafter referred to as the “meeting”) was held. Before the meeting, Yu Yong, Wang Hua, Gu Yunhao, Ding Baoding, Wang Yiqun, Long Wanli, and other officials of the four leading groups in the district (namely, the Party Committee, the NPC, the municipal government, and the CPPCC) warmly met with outstanding groups and individuals who made remarkable contributions to the Games, and shook hands and took group photos with them.
Yu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Jing’an District Committee, extended his congratulations to the athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements and encouraged them to continuously display high-spirited morale with tenacity and carry forward the spirit of enterprise to overcome difficulties to make more incredible achievements and write a new chapter in Jing’an’s sports cause.
This year’s Shanghai Games, of the largest scale and with the highest standard, was held by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government in the context of routine epidemic prevention and control. A total of 1,882 athletes were selected to be the strongest delegation members of Jing’an District in all previous Games and participated in the competitions of 34 sports and 48 events, such as baseball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, and swimming in the teenager group of the Games.
With the strong support of the CPC Jing’an District Committee and Jing’an District People’s Government and the joint efforts of the units of delegation members, all coaches and athletes fully carried forward the Olympic motto of Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together, and had the courage to challenge, make breakthroughs and transcend themselves, thus delivering the mentality of Jing’an people to strive for excellence.
In the end, the delegation of Jing’an District won 99 gold medals, 56 silver medals, and 73.25 bronze medals in the Games, with a total of 5,428.5 points. During the cycle of the Games, the delegation scored 392.5 points and got 30 medals in all kinds of national competitions and the training and delivery of outstanding sports reserve talents. The delegation ranked fifth in the city in terms of the total score of the group and the ranking of the group medals in the comprehensive standing during the cycle of the Games, setting the best record for Jing’an.
In addition to the “Sportsmanship Award” and the “Fastest Progress Award of Group Medals” of the 17th Shanghai Games, the delegation also won many awards and honors, such as the 2019-2022 “Outstanding Contribution Award of the Olympic Games and National Games”, the 2019-2021 “Winning Award of Shanghai Youth Sports Elite Series”, and won the first prize in the selection of the “Excellent Group Award” of the teenager group of the 17th Shanghai Games. Two coaches of Jing’an District won the 2018-2021 Shanghai “Excellent Youth Training Coaches”, 42 athletes won the “Future Star” of the 17th Shanghai Games, and 23 athletes set municipal youth records. Besides, the men’s baseball Groups B and C and men’s taekwondo competitions of the Shanghai Games hosted by Jing’an District won the Excellent Division Award of the Shanghai Games. The Jing’an District government successfully completed the key task to “forming a team to participate in the 17th Shanghai Games” in 2022.
The meeting saw a summary report on the preparations of the delegation of Jing’an District for the Games; Jing’an District Youth Amateur Sports School and Shanghai Zhabei No.8 Middle School made exchanges. Besides, the meeting also witnessed a commendation of outstanding groups and excellent coaches and athletes who have achieved excellent results and made outstanding contributions.
Wei Zonghai, Vice President of Jing’an District No. 2 Youth Amateur Sports School, is also the head coach of the Jing’an Baseball Team. This time, Jing’an Baseball Team won all the champions in all groups with 12 gold medals. Wei Zonghai, who won the title of “Top Ten Coaches” of the delegation, said that such outstanding results could not have been made without the tenacity and fight of athletes and coaches, as well as the strong support of primary and secondary schools. More excellent sports talents caught the eyes of the public because of the in-depth integration of sports and education in Jing’an District.
Zhong Xiayao from Shanghai Yucai High School won the champions of Individual and Group Women’s Sabre Group A in the fencing event and retained the title of “Top Ten Athletes” of the delegation. She told the reporter that under the careful guidance of the coach, she overcame many difficulties such as venue constraints, and maintained constant physical and basic skills training through home training and borrowing venues, which laid a foundation for success.
Arrangements for promoting youth sports in the next stage have been made in the meeting: Jing’an District should attach great emphasis on youth sports and make steady moves to develop them for comprehensive improvement in the physical fitness of the youth in the district; it should make overall planning and innovate the sports development mechanism to open up new prospects for youth sports work; all departments should work together to establish and improve an effective cooperation mechanism and pool together strengths to advance the development of sports in the district.
As the 17th Shanghai Games succeeded, the new cycle of youth sports work has begun. Under the guidance of the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress, Jing’an will carry forward the sports spirit of “solidarity, cooperation, fight, and enterprise” and move forward and scale new heights with vigorous and determined endeavor and tenacious spirit, thus pushing the development of its sports cause to a new stage.
