On February 24, the “Holographic Zoo” immersive experience project kicked off at the B1 Temporary Exhibition Hall of Shanghai Natural History Museum. Visitors can immerse themselves in the virtual habitats of various rare dinosaurs, such as a Tyrannosaurus rex roaring at you, a pterosaur soaring above your head, a baby dinosaur hatching from its shell, and an Apatosaurus brushing past you. Let’s go and take a look.
Stepping into the 19-meter-long “Holographic Corridor” in the “Holographic Zoo”, you will experience an immediate visual impact as prehistoric biological scenes unfold before your eyes. Giant creatures from ancient times, such as Tyrannosaurus rex and pterosaurs, appear almost tangibly close. They may dart unexpectedly before you, so close that you can almost feel their breath, which offers an unprecedented immersive experience. Visitors thus transform into time travelers, journeying through the ancient world.
Introduction by Zhou Ming, project coordinator of “Holographic Zoo”
at Shanghai Natural History Museum:
“Shanghai Natural History Museum houses over 280,000 exhibits, with more than 8,000 being ancient biological specimens. Ancient biological specimens differ significantly from modern ones, as their active eras are too distant from the modern age. Perhaps due to the vast expanse of time, the public finds it challenging to imagine or understand the living habits, physical characteristics, survival environments, and interrelationships of these ancient beings. The immersive experience of the Holographic Zoo primarily utilizes advanced digital technology to breathe new life into exhibits, breaking the boundaries of time and space. The Holographic Zoo brings ancient biological specimens closer to the public, enabling visitors to interact with them up close.”
According to the introduction, the “Holographic Zoo” project employs ultra-short-throw holographic projection technology, encompassing three major sections: the “Holographic Theater”, the “Holographic Corridor”, and the “Holographic Fence”. These elements guide visitors to explore the mysterious ancient world from a fresh perspective, coming into close contact with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. At the “Holographic Fence”, visitors can gaze down at various dinosaurs and insects situated 30 meters below, closely observing the living habits of dinosaurs and reptiles of different sizes.
Zhang Xuebing, founder and CEO of Shanghai Euleeverse Technology Co., Ltd., explained, “The Holographic Zoo utilizes the world’s most cutting-edge holographic projection technology to build the Holographic Corridor, which was recognized as one of the Best Inventions of 2023 by Time. In the Holographic Zoo, we integrate comprehensive holographic projection technology with position dynamic tracking techniques to provide visitors with the optimal perspective for a fully immersive experience.”
According to relevant information, this project was once exhibited at the Australian Museum. The project’s debut in China offers visitors a more diverse means to experience nature, comprehend it, and foster a love for it.
