On September 15, Wang Jia Sha’s new branch opened at 85 Changning Road. Introducing a self-service weighed meal option—the first for the brand, the branch blends traditional flavors with modern dining styles. Its opening drew a diverse crowd, including residents, office workers, and international visitors.
The 160-square-meter space is thoughtfully arranged, featuring a dine-in area and a street-side takeaway section. Bright and inviting, the branch conveys a fresh yet familiar vibe. The standout feature is the self-service weighed meal zone, where around 16 classic local dishes are displayed. Choices include Steamed Fish Head with Diced Hot Red Peppers, Eel with Sizzling Oil, Tender Boiled Shrimp, and Braised Pork in Local Style— all evoking the authentic taste of Shanghai. Priced at RMB 3.68 per 50 grams for all dishes, plus RMB 2 for unlimited rice and soup, the offer is widely regarded as great value. “Customers are free to choose what they like—more shrimp, a balance of meat and veggies,” said Wang Xiaodong, branch manager. He added that this flexible dining model allows complete freedom, and menu adjustments will be made based on sales and feedback to keep popular items and introduce new and diverse options.
Beyond the self-service section, the branch offers other delights. At the à la carte section, noodles are served with freshly wok-fried toppings, full of aroma and wok hei. Nearby, traditional Shanghai-style dishes like wontons, pork ribs with rice cakes, Guotie (pan-fried meat dumplings), and spring rolls are made following time-honored methods, evoking nostalgic street food memories.
“Dining with family always leaves me torn between ordering too much (and wasting food) or too little (and leaving everyone hungry). This self-service style is perfect—I can try a little of everything I like without waste. The braised pork and boiled shrimp are delicious, and I can get refills on rice and soup. It is a great value,” said Ms. Li, a resident, while selecting her dishes. Gabrielle, a visitor from France, also praised the crab roe soup dumplings from the à la carte section: “Light, sweet, and fresh—it is my first time trying them, and I am impressed.”
As a well-established Shanghai brand, Wang Jia Sha continues to honor local culinary traditions while adapting to modern diners’ preferences. The innovative self-service weighed meal format offers a convenient and flexible dining experience.
