Commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Long March victory and the 101st anniversary of the May Thirtieth Movement, Jing'an District launched a special Labor Movement session as a part of its signature study-tour brand, 'Walking in Revolutionary Jing'an' City Walk. With this event, revolutionary resources were combined with ideological and political education, and the project of promoting the revolutionary culture of the "Cradle of the Party" has been advanced. During that day, twenty students from Zhabei No. 3 Central Primary School in Jing'an District gathered here and took an immersive walk through the district's revolutionary neighborhoods. Children retraced the century-old footsteps of the labor movement and internalized the revolutionary spirit in this real-scene, experiential open class.
As a core hub of revolutionary culture in Shanghai, Jing'an District is home to 106 significant revolutionary sites and ruins, boasting a wealth of heritage with unique features. To leverage high-quality local revolutionary resources and innovate youth education, the Publicity Department of the CPC Jing'an District Committee, in collaboration with the Office of the Cybersecurity Affairs Commission and the Party History Research Office of the CPC Jing'an District Committee, the Education Bureau of Jing'an District, the Federation of Trade Unions of Jing'an District, Baoshan Road Sub-district, the Memorial of the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and Jing'an District Cultural Relics Protection and Management Service Center, has launched the "Walking in Revolutionary Jing'an" City Walk study-tour project.
Instead of isolated site visits, the project establishes a pioneering framework that links routes through themes, and takes the city as a classroom, history as a textbook, and walking as the medium of exploration. Through a multi-dimensional layout featuring six themed routes, six exclusive illustrated manuals, six signature study tours, and six promotional short videos, the project weaves scattered revolutionary landmarks into systematic revolutionary narratives. In this project, it transforms static historical sites into vibrant classrooms for ideological and political education, creating the "Jing'an Paradigm"—a new model for revolutionary education that is "walkable, perceptible, sharable, and inheritable"—ensuring that revolutionary culture resonates with the eyes, ears, minds, and hearts of the youth.
In this event, "From the Revolutionary Prelude to the Dawn of the City: A Journey Tracing a Century-Old Labor Movement in Shanghai" is a key one among the six themed study routes. It links four core revolutionary landmarks, including the Commemorative Landmark of Sanzengli (Office of the Central Bureau after the 3rd CPC National Congress), the Huzhou Guild Hall (Site of the Former Federation of Trade Unions of Shanghai and Headquarters of the Third Armed Uprising of Shanghai Workers), the Exhibition Site of the Former Federation of Trade Unions of Shanghai, and the Exhibition Hall of China Labor Combination Secretary Department Site. They form a clear and cohesive study tour that provides a panoramic portrayal of the magnificent journey of Shanghai's labor movement under the CPC leadership.
Featuring a pioneering "walk-and-shuttle" immersive experience, the event blends historical records with physical ruins and real-life narratives. It allows teenagers to break free from the pages of history books and stand face-to-face with the past to feel the pulse of revolutionary memories amidst the hustle and bustle of the city and reflect on the historical mission that our generation shall take at the locations where these momentous events took place.
Setting out from the Sanzengli on their campus, the young learners gathered to hear from their peer, Zhu Yanjie. As a teenage guide, Zhu brought to life the storied past of revolutionary pioneers like Chen Duxiu, Mao Zedong, and Cai Hesen. She shared how these leaders operated under the guise of the Guanjuanhang (Customs Duty Agency) to secretly coordinate revolutionary work concerning the whole country from their base in Jing'an.
During the walking tour, Zhu Yi’ning—Jing'an International Ambassador, a specially appointed guide for the "Walking in Revolutionary Jing'an" City Walk, and the founder of SimpliCity—provided commentary on the historical origins of the revolutionary sites along Huiwen Road. He, with students, looked back on how the revolutionary sparks quietly spread across Jing'an on the eve of the May Thirtieth Movement and eventually grew into a prairie fire.
At the Huzhou Guild Hall, Zhang Xiaogu, a professional guide working with the hall, led students in revisiting the epic 30-hour bloody struggle of the Third Armed Uprising of Shanghai Workers. They honored the noble integrity of Martyr Wang Shouhua, who dedicated his life to the nation, and gained a profound appreciation for the revolutionary spirit of the working class in their courageous defiance against oppressive powers.
In the shuttle-based study tour, students visited the Exhibition Site of the Former Federation of Trade Unions of Shanghai and the Exhibition Hall of the China Labor Combination Secretary Department Site. Under the guidance of guides Zhou Qi and Yuan Meng, they gained a systematic understanding of how the May Thirtieth Movement broke out and advanced. They also learned the story of Comrade Qu Qiubai, who was a patriotic personage and once used the Bloody Hot Daily as his weapon to awaken more people’s minds through his pen.
Students also experienced the immersive audio theater titled Bridge of Sound: Echoes of 1921. The scenes where the working class struggled and explored a century ago seemed to come to life before them. This experience led to a profound recognition of the historical significance of the China Labor Union Secretariat Department, which was established as the Party's first public institution for leading the labor movement. They fostered more understanding of the spirit that made the labor movement happen in that era.
The practice of this labor movement-themed study tour is a deep integration of Jing'an's revolutionary resources with ideological and political education for the youth. It fulfills the work requirements that we shall inherit and promote revolutionary culture and patriotic education in the new era, while being a valuable experience for innovative regional revolutionary education.
Moving forward, Jing'an District will continue to delve into the regional revolutionary culture, innovate and optimize its study tour program system, and launch high-quality revolutionary walking tours on a regular basis. By emphasizing the effectiveness of revolutionary education, the district aims to help young people to appreciate the city's revolutionary heritage and draw inspiration for their journey ahead. This initiative ensures that the century-old revolutionary legacy is passed down through generations, so youth are equipped with ideals and beliefs that the path forward requires and with revolutionary momentum for their growth and development.
